As part of our ongoing funder education programming, Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media presented part 1 of a 2-part funder briefing, Open Data, Crowdsourcing and Open Video on November 18, 2010.

The briefing focused on the ideas surrounding the creation, distribution and control of information and highlighted the rapidly changing ways that we can -- and should -- use information. Examples included open data for government transparency and journalism; crowdsourcing for content creation, fundraising, brainstorming and film distribution; and the interactive and generative potential of open video.

Presenters Geoffrey MacDougall from the Mozilla Foundation, Ellen Miller from the Sunlight Foundation and Ben Moskowitz from the Open Video Alliance shared their thoughts on open information concepts and talked about how funders play a key role in advancing openness and access in our society.

For access to the presentation's powerpoint slides and to listen to the briefing see the attachments below.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this briefing series, which will offer participants the chance to see some examples of open video projects in the works and learn more about open video's impact on the nonprofit and creative sectors.
