The Nonprofit Road: It’s Paved Not with Gold, but with Good Journalism

The September/October issue of the Columbia Journalism Review features an article by Charles Lewis based on his April 2007 report, "The Growing Importance of Nonprofit Journalism," for the Harvard University Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy. The article challenges philanthropy to help stablize the field of journalism in service to democracy.

Charles Lewis is journalist-in-residence at American University in Washington and president of the Fund for Independence in Journalism. He was a Shorenstein Fellow in the spring of 2006. From 1989 through 2004, he founded and directed the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, where he co-authored five books, including The Buying of the President 2004.
