GFEM Member Briefing at COF Annual Conference 2007

Listen to GFEM’s April 29 briefing on the state of the media field and learn about opportunities for funders to effect sustainable social change through media grantmaking. The issues of marketing and childhood obesity, MTV and HIV/AIDS, once and future methods of media distribution and civic engagement and other topics are discussed. Each clip is followed by audience Q&A.

Three segments featuring 1) author Jeff Chester and Media Policy Working Group’s Lynn Stern; 2) Kaiser Family Foundation’s Kimberly Dasher; and 3) Simon Kilmurry of P.O.V., Debra Zimmerman of Women Make Movies, and Act Now Production’s David Steuer.

Clip 1: A conversation between Lynn Stern and Jeff Chester focuses on how new media is threatening our privacy and targeting our children—as well as creating a digitally charged over-commercialized world. How do we position the public interest in the digital era to counter these trends? Is there an opportunity for philanthropy to preserve the openness and diversity of the Internet in the broadband era? For additional information related to this thought-provoking conversation, read the introduction to Chester’s Digital Destiny and his report, co-authored with Kathryn Montgomery, on Interactive Food & Beverage marketing targeting children and youth.

Clip 2: Kimberly Dasher, program officer, Kaiser Family Foundation presents Kaiser’s ground-breaking partnerships with commercial media entities such as MTV, BET, FOX and others—both domestically and internationally—and the significant impact those partnerships have had on young people around the issue of HIV/AIDS. Kimberley shares financial and creative strategies, clips and research results.

Clip3: A panel featuring Simon Kilmurry, executive producer, P.O.V; Debra Zimmerman, executive director, Women Make Movies and David Steuer, managing director, Act Now Productions/Ironweed Films. The panel shares their experiences in this dynamic media environment, discussing the changing trends in long and short form media, the need for funders to work with filmmakers to ensure the ability to repurpose films for multiple delivery platforms, and outreach and distribution strategies to promote civic engagement.
