LEF Announces Updated Mission and Guidelines for 2009

LEF New England has posted new guidelines and an updated mission statement that reflect the recent decision to focus all grant making on the independent film and video community in New England.  A summary of their new mission statement and additional program information is available for download below.

LEF’s targeted funding of independent film and video began in 2002 with the establishment of The Moving Image Fund. Over the past 7 years, LEF New England has granted a total of $1.8 million across genres, helping to bring to fruition films such as the documentary Secrecy by Robb Moss and Peter Galison, Fable by animator Dan Sousa, and the experimental film trilogy Cake and Steak, The Future is Behind You, and Surf and Turf by Abigail Child.

Beginning in 2007, LEF New England entered a planning process that resulted in a bold new direction to fund only independent film and video, thereby eliminating its support of other contemporary art disciplines. The concentration of LEF resources will allow for greater impact, and independent film, with its increasing capacity to inform and animate the larger public conversation, was the chosen medium.

LEF New England will begin this work with a focus on documentary filmmaking, providing larger, multi-year grants to selected projects. In this way, LEF hopes to create a continuum of support for the most exciting independent documentary films produced in New England. In selecting projects to support, LEF will continue to identify new talent and follow the lead of artists willing to push traditional boundaries.

LEF New England intends to take the work a step further and look for ways to broaden recognition and support for the work of New England filmmakers and identify how its grant making fits into a broader, national network of support for independents.

To do this, LEF will continue to cultivate relationships with colleagues across the country and participate in the dynamic, ongoing exchange of knowledge and information related to the challenges and opportunities facing independent filmmakers. LEF looks forward to sharing the learning from this next phase of their work with the field.
