With newspapers and broadcasters slashing their arts coverage, even as Yelp, Amazon, and 300,000 arts blogs blossom, the inevitable questions arise: do we need professional critics, and if so, how can they survive? This Web Conference will cover the changing field of arts journalism, its challenges and opportunities, and initiatives exploring its evolution in a changing culture. One such initiative, the Knight/NEA Community Arts Journalism Challenge, was first introduced to the GIA community at the 2011 Conference. A program update will include profiles of grantees like CriticCar Detroit, a mobile unit that captures citizen reviews of performances and exhibitions.
Anyone can register for a GIA Web Conference. They are free to members and $35 each for non-members. Arts & Journalism in the Digital Age is the third installment in the 2012 Web Conference Series. Learn more and sign up for future web events on the GIA website.
