International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) Pre-Conference Institute – The Revolution in Mobile Media: Power (and Peril) to the People

Date:
Monday, July 16, 2012
Location:
New York, NY
Mobile media, for the purposes of this institute, refers to the devices and processes that allow individuals to collect, curate, distribute and consume information through mobile devices. Mobile devices include smartphones, feature phones and tablet devices that provide users access to the Internet. Developments in mobile media are having a transformative impact on human rights as they can lower the barriers for human rights advocates – or any user – to document abuses and tell their stories to broader audiences, often in near real-time.

This institute will take a step back, engaging funders in looking critically at the use of mobile communication devices in advancing human rights. While playing a profound role in human rights, mobile media also presents complex privacy and security risks for users.

This institute will examine the tension between technology's promise and peril in the world of human rights. A second thread of the institute will explore the role of mobile media in helping to effectively communicate human rights stories.

Funders will explore:
  • how to support the creation and implementation of new technology tools and strategies to advance human rights
  • strategies to minimize security risks for human rights defenders while continuing to reap the benefits of mobile technology
  • government policies that limit or enhance the capacity of activists to use mobile technology as an effective human rights reporting tool
  • effective media and communications practices to convey human rights stories and issues
