Bully: Using Film to Move Mission
Join us for a discussion of how to use film to move your mission in and beyond the movie theater. We’ll watch clips from the critically acclaimed film Bully, a documentary that follows the lives of students who face bullying on a daily basis. The film premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Engage in a thought-provoking discussion with the film’s director and an educator in the field. Session designer: Media Impact Funders
- Vince Stehle, moderator
- Lee Hirsch, director
- Jack Weinstein, Facing History & Ourselves
Plus - Special Funder Meeting with Lee Hirsch Sunday, October 7 @ 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the Mason Room
Meet Lee Hirsch, director of the film, Bully, for an informal conversation with funders. Learn more about the film's success; its robust outreach campaign The Bully Project, which highlights solutions to immediate bullying issues and works on systemic change; and how Lee is partnering with Facing History and Ourselves and the Einhorn Family Charitable Trust to transform the story into a massive movement for change.
This will be a chance to sit down and talk with one of the brightest directors in the documentary field and learn about Lee's work to ensure the film makes an impact in the lives of our children.
San Francisco and Oakland have been taking the film's message seriously. San Francisco recently hosted a two-day anti-bullying summit with Mayor Ed Lee and Superintendent of Schools Richard Carranza, complete with a screening of Bully. In addition nearly all of Oakland's middle and high school students have been taken to see the film, so they can begin the work of ending bullying among students.
Funders interested in education, youth, social change and social justice are encouraged to join the conversation to add their perspectives, and hear about ways to use media projects like Bully to move their mission.
Monday, October 8 @ 3:30 - 5 pm in the Mason Room

Join us for a discussion of how to use film to move your mission in and beyond the movie theater. We’ll watch clips from the critically acclaimed film “The Interrupters,” a documentary that tells the story of violence interrupters who try to protect their communities from the violence they once employed. Engage in a thought-provoking discussion with the film’s director (who also made “Hoop Dreams”) and an outreach director in the field. Session designer: Media Impact Funders
- Vince Stehle, moderator
- Steve James, director
- Sonia Childress, outreach director
Dessert & Film Screening: The Interrupters @ 8:30 pm in Continental 1/2
The Interrupters, a MacArthur Foundation-supported film by Steve James and Alex Kotlowitz made with Kartemquin Films, is a powerful documentary from the creators of Hoop Dreams. Presenting a raw and unflinching portrait of CeaseFire (now known as CureViolence), the film follows three "interrupters" as they courageously struggle to personally interrupt the cycle of violence in the streets of Chicago.
This event is open to all funders, regardless of their registration at the Association of Small Foundation's conference.
Funders focusing on urban areas, violence, gun-control, conflict resolution, youth, and film and media will benefit from this screening and lively discussion over dessert.
Please RSVP to Lyn Church.
