Now accepting applications for the 2010 Institute

The seventh National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera – part of a series of NEA-funded programs across the country that focus on improving arts criticism in classical music, opera, theater and dance – will take place Oct. 9 - 19, 2010 at Columbia University.  The application deadline for this October’s institute is July 20, 2010.

The NEA Arts Journalism Institutes are helping to establish the importance of professional training in the coverage of the arts through lectures and seminars with leaders in higher education, the arts and journalism.  The programs are designed for journalists located primarily outside the largest media markets, where professional development opportunities are limited, but a limited number of positions will be considered for applicants from major media markets as well.  Institutes for dance critics are also being hosted by the American Dance Festival at Duke University, for theater critics at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication, and for visual arts critics at American University.  The programs cover most of the participants’ expenses.

About the 2009 Institute
The sixth annual Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, was held at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism in October, 2009.  Twenty-four critics, reporters and editors attended about three dozen sessions at the Journalism School and around New York City.  Events included concerts at iconic classical-music and opera venues, behind-the-scenes presentations by renowned academics and experts, classroom seminars on the history and concepts of classical music, meetings with cultural leaders and writing workshops led by nationally recognized music critics.  In response to recent changes in the coverage of cultural news, the Institute included several sessions on digital and broadcast media.
